Style Your Life
Animation, May 2019
Style Your Life is my first animation, drawn on Procreate and animated frame-by-frame in After Effects. It was part of my undergraduate thesis, closely tied to the same themes of dual identity and materialism as explored in A Great Big Feeling. I grew up playing dress up games and I still find a lot of inspiration in the overdone, plastic femininity. I felt drawn to the way these games rewarded the "right" choices in clothing and the way dressing yourself could be a game in the first place. This concept felt connected to the way people discover their identity and how we outwardly represent ourselves through clothing and other material things, especially during adolescence. I incorporated themes of my own adolescence and how clothing contributed to my understanding of culture (American, Chinese, and all the combinations melted between the two) and the connection to self.
